Personal Statement:

The Importance of Being Recognized: Going Above and Beyond on Campus

By Sarah A. Davis

Students should go to college not only for an academic education, but for social and cultural learning as well; reaching above and beyond typical university norms and participating in several on and off campus programs.  This creates not only a better person but a highly experienced leader as well.  By participating in programs within the residence halls and university apartments, donating time to community service, partaking in conferences, and involving oneself with special-interest clubs, a person will become more rounded as an individual; having met more people, immersed themselves in quality activities, and made a difference in the community.   As such, these dedicated people should then be recognized for their accomplishments.  It is just as important that a good deed gets done as it is to recognize and congratulate the person who has taken the time to do it.  Recognition allows for a feeling of importance; that the time spent was worth it.  Recognition also prompts further participation by those being recognized as well as awareness to others who become interested by the recognition someone else got.  Many leaders on campus do not necessarily get recognized for their great accomplishments.  These people may not be socially popular; however they have contributed extraordinary amounts of personal time and energy in order to make a difference on campus.  These are the students who need to be recognized and shown that what they do matters.  Therefore, it is highly important not only to be involved on campus, but also to be recognized and recognize your peers who are also dedicated to making a difference.
